Yamaha WR125R Left Side
Yamaha has once again captured the spotlight in the dual-sport world with its WR125R Concept showcased at the Motor Bike Expo 2026, presenting what many believe could be the ideal small-capacity dual-sport motorcycle for everyday riding and light adventure. This concept blends classic trail bike capability with commuter-friendly usability, potentially filling a unique niche in the modern motorcycle market.
The WR125R “Show Edition” draws inspiration from retro-flavoured ’90s off-road bikes, but its focus is very much on real-world versatility. Yamaha describes this concept as a machine designed to be comfortable for daily use, yet capable of tackling rough terrain beyond smooth highway asphalt. The bike’s compact engine and robust chassis are engineered to make off-road exploration feel natural and confidence-inspiring, especially for newer riders.
At the heart of the WR125R is a 125 cc liquid-cooled, fuel-injected single-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA). This technology optimises performance across the rev range by switching between two intake cam profiles, enhancing torque at low and mid-range speeds while still offering strong top-end power. Such an engine character makes the WR125R suitable for both city commuting and trail riding without overwhelming less experienced riders.
Reports from independent automotive sources estimate the engine produces around 15 hp (11 kW) at 10,000 rpm with 11 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm, compliant with modern emissions standards (EU5+). This setup provides just enough power for spirited riding while remaining easy to manage — a key goal for an entry-level dual-sport.
One of the standout features of the WR125R is its dual-sport-ready chassis, featuring a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel mounted with Dunlop D605 dual-sport tyres that offer grip on both paved roads and loose surfaces. These larger wheels improve stability and handling on rough terrain, giving riders the confidence to explore trails, dirt paths and backroads without hesitation.
The suspension setup further enhances the bike’s off-road prowess. It includes an upright 41 mm KYB® front fork with approximately 8.5 inches of travel and a gas-filled KYB® rear shock with around 7.3 inches of travel, configured to absorb bumps and uneven surfaces comfortably while maintaining agility. These components help the WR125R balance everyday ride comfort with credible trail performance.
Braking duties on the WR125R are handled by disc brakes at both ends, with the front setup featuring a larger single disc and front ABS to ensure controlled stopping power in varied conditions. While this isn’t a high-end multi-channel ABS system, it provides reliable braking for both on-road and light off-road use, prioritising rider confidence across different surfaces.
The WR125R is not just about rugged capability; it also includes modern rider conveniences. The concept features a multi-function LCD instrument panel and smartphone connectivity via Yamaha’s Y-Connect system, allowing riders to receive call and message notifications, track ride data such as distance and fuel use, and even monitor motorcycle location through a dedicated smartphone app.
This level of connectivity is particularly useful for riders who use their motorcycle both as a daily commuter and a weekend adventure companion, ensuring useful information is always accessible.
Visually, the WR125R carries design cues that reflect Yamaha’s competition-ready WR and YZ series, with aggressive styling, dual LED headlights, and a flat motocross-style seat that transitions easily between sitting and standing positions. The seat height is estimated around 875 mm, which is typical for dual-sport bikes and helps with ground clearance off-road while still being manageable in urban use.
Ergonomics are focused on rider comfort and control, with roomy upright seating, wide motocross-style footpegs for stability, and a compact body that aids manoeuvrability — crucial for both traffic navigation and trail exploration.
The WR125R doesn’t just represent a concept; it signals Yamaha’s intention to reignite interest in small-capacity dual-sport motorcycles. With growing demand for bikes that can handle both daily errands and adventurous detours — a trend seen especially among young riders and newcomers to motorcycle touring — a compact machine like the WR125R could meaningfully widen access to dual-sport riding.
In markets like India, where larger adventure bikes are often expensive and intimidating for beginners, a 125 cc dual-sport with genuine trail capability and modern features could be exactly what riders have been waiting for. Competitors such as Hero XPulse and Kawasaki KLX230 have shown there is appetite for lightweight trail-friendly bikes that are equally at home on the road or dirt, and the WR125R’s concept appears to respond directly to that demand.
